Rice terraces in Ubud, Bali

Bali has a reputation as a luxury honeymoon island, but it is also one of the best-value destinations you can reach from India. With a little planning, a week of temples, beaches and rice terraces costs less than a long weekend in Goa during peak season.

When to book

Book flights six to eight weeks ahead and travel between late April and June, or in September, when the weather is dry but hotels have shoulder-season prices. Avoid Indian school holidays and the Christmas week, when fares from Mumbai and Delhi can double.

Where to stay

  • Ubud (3 nights): family-run homestays with breakfast start at around ₹2,200 a night.
  • Canggu or Seminyak (3 nights): guesthouses with a shared pool from ₹2,800 a night.
  • Nusa Penida (1 night): simple bungalows near Crystal Bay make the island less rushed.

Money-saving tips

  1. Eat at local warungs — a plate of nasi campur costs under ₹200.
  2. Hire a driver for the full day instead of paying per attraction.
  3. Carry a refillable bottle; most cafés refill for free.
  4. Pay for activities in rupiah cash to avoid card surcharges.
The best Bali moments are free: sunrise over the Tegallalang terraces, a sunset at Batu Bolong beach and the sound of gamelan drifting out of a village temple.
