The nationwide Japan Rail Pass became significantly more expensive, and for many first-time visitors individual Shinkansen tickets are now cheaper. Here is how to decide.
The quick rule
If your trip is just Tokyo → Kyoto → Osaka and back to Tokyo, individual tickets usually cost less. Add Hiroshima, Kanazawa or a northern loop, and the 7-day pass starts to pay for itself.
Regional passes are the hidden gem
- JR Kansai Area Pass: Kyoto, Osaka, Nara and Kobe
- JR East Pass (Tohoku): Tokyo to Sendai and the north
- Hakone Free Pass: trains, ropeway and the Lake Ashi boat
Use an IC card (Suica or ICOCA) for metro and local trains — it saves time at every gate.
